Modern Movie Trailer

Modern Movie Trailer

The Soundtrack

The soundtrack is one of the most important parts of a trailer as this can change the genre of the actual film. If dramatic music is used then the genre of the film is most likely to be an action or thriller film where as if calm and gentle music is used then the film is more likely to be a romantic film and maybe a comedy film. An example of the soundtrack being important to the film is The Dark Knight Rises. The soundtrack at the start of the trailer is a young boy playing the national anthem. This meant in the film, being American could have some importance to the film. The national anthem plays for around 30 seconds and then is starts to get quieter. Some dramatic music is played over the top to create suspense in the film. At around the 1 minute 9 seconds mark, the oust of men chanting something is added over the two other songs. This means that there are 3 different soundtracks being played at once. At 1 minute 27, the three other soundtracks stop playing and some new dramatic music is added which links to the crescendo of the trailer which is very dramatic. This is an example of the rise. At the 2 minute mark, the original Batman theme tune come on which shows that the film is a Batman film. This means that five different soundtracks were used in one trailer.

Other things are used which link to the soundtrack. An example of this is the turn line. This is when the music drops out for someone to speak most of the time. It is used a lot in comedy films as it makes the trailer more humorous for the audience. An example of this is in the 22 jump street trailer at the start. The music stops because the two main characters are asked to hold hands which would be seemed a humorous to a lot of people in the audience.

Another thing which is used is Hits. Hits is the dramatic drum beats used in trailers. They are most commonly used in action and thriller movies. Hits are used in the The Dark Knight Rises trailer at the end of the trailer when it is giving the information about when the film comes out and also where you can go and see the film. This keeps the audience interested in the trailer right to the end.

The Button is when there is a joke at the end of the trailer. An example of this is in the film Grimsby. At the end of the trailer. he shoots a seagull and he goes 'No wonder you like guns so much'. This is a joke of which the audience will find funny and so it is a skill used to attract people to come and watch the film.
