How to make a trailer research post.

    The Purpose

The purpose of a trailer is attract people to go and watch the film when it comes out. This means that  an overview of the film is shown in the trailer to attract people to come and watch it. The best bits of the film are mostly shown in the trailer as this is what makes people interested in the film. The trailer also however needs to high a key element to the film otherwise the audience will feel there is no point going to watch the trailer as they already can see what happens in the trailer. This is why trailers have to be clever and show people enough to want to go and watch the film.

Lot of different forms of media are used to attract people to a film with a trailer just being one of them. Magazine front covers and posters are made for films which mostly shows the main character in the film taking up most of the page. Posters are made out to look dramatic for an action film for example a blown up car behind the main character.

    Target Audience

The target audience is very important because if the film producers to try and attract a certain target audience, then they are at risk of not as many people coming to see the film as expected. A target audience for example could be teenagers and young adults. Large majority of action films and crime films are aimed at that particular target audience This means that they base their trailer and other media products around the target audience as this will make the interested coming to see the film. Film company's need to look for the best place then to put their posters and also the trailers so that target audience will see the film advertised a lot. It is good to attract a wide range target audience as this means a bigger audience.

    Filming

Filming is the most important part of the trailer because this is what is shown to the audience to try and get them to watch the film. A trailer includes the best bits of filming when making a film and so it is very important that there are lots of shots which have been filmed and will attract people. For an action film, the audience will want to see the action in the film and so the filming needs to be very dramatic.

    Music

Music is very important in a trailer as it sets the mood of the film. The best trailers use music which links to what is happening in the trailer itself. Lots of trailers use more than one soundtrack in the trailer to give the audience a feel of the different things which could happen in the film itself. For example in the Dark Knight Rises, the trailer has four soundtracks and the music at the start of the film is vey slow and calm as it is the American national anthem but then as the trailer goes on, the music becomes louder and more dramatic.

    Editing

Editing is close to the most important thing in a trailer. Editing includes everything I have already talked about as it links the filming and music together to create one big spectacle for the audience to be drawn into. Other things which are needed to be thought about is whether or not to have a voiceover over the filming and the music as this is another element which improves the quality of some trailers. If a voiceover is used then the music's volume should be lowered so you can hear the dialogue clearly. When also editing the shots, the length of them is very important. They need to be at just the right amount of length to keep the audience excited and interested.

    Modern Movie Trailer

    Modern Movie Trailer

    The Soundtrack

The soundtrack is one of the most important parts of a trailer as this can change the genre of the actual film. If dramatic music is used then the genre of the film is most likely to be an action or thriller film where as if calm and gentle music is used then the film is more likely to be a romantic film and maybe a comedy film. An example of the soundtrack being important to the film is The Dark Knight Rises. The soundtrack at the start of the trailer is a young boy playing the national anthem. This meant in the film, being American could have some importance to the film. The national anthem plays for around 30 seconds and then is starts to get quieter. Some dramatic music is played over the top to create suspense in the film. At around the 1 minute 9 seconds mark, the oust of men chanting something is added over the two other songs. This means that there are 3 different soundtracks being played at once. At 1 minute 27, the three other soundtracks stop playing and some new dramatic music is added which links to the crescendo of the trailer which is very dramatic. This is an example of the rise. At the 2 minute mark, the original Batman theme tune come on which shows that the film is a Batman film. This means that five different soundtracks were used in one trailer.

Other things are used which link to the soundtrack. An example of this is the turn line. This is when the music drops out for someone to speak most of the time. It is used a lot in comedy films as it makes the trailer more humorous for the audience. An example of this is in the 22 jump street trailer at the start. The music stops because the two main characters are asked to hold hands which would be seemed a humorous to a lot of people in the audience.

Another thing which is used is Hits. Hits is the dramatic drum beats used in trailers. They are most commonly used in action and thriller movies. Hits are used in the The Dark Knight Rises trailer at the end of the trailer when it is giving the information about when the film comes out and also where you can go and see the film. This keeps the audience interested in the trailer right to the end.

The Button is when there is a joke at the end of the trailer. An example of this is in the film Grimsby. At the end of the trailer. he shoots a seagull and he goes 'No wonder you like guns so much'. This is a joke of which the audience will find funny and so it is a skill used to attract people to come and watch the film.
